"Build in public" became "perform in public" sometime in 2023 and we never recovered.
The "we're building this in public!" tweets that are clearly drafted by a marketing person are a special kind of cringe.
I still find genuine build-in-public accounts. They're smaller now and they don't use the phrase "build in public".
The genre got eaten by the audience for the genre. Once "build in public" became a personal brand strategy, it stopped being honest.
Build in public was always performing. The 2020 version was just performing for a smaller, less hostile audience.
